Creative Documentary, 52'
In the darkest holes of a prison, a young Palestinian artist manages to resist 15 years of imprisonment thanks to smuggled crayons and pillowcases.
En el rincón más oscuro de una prisión, un joven artista palestino preso logra resistir y mantener su salud mental durante 15 años, gracias a un puñado de crayones y la solidaridad de todos sus compañeros.
Crayons of Askalan
is a creative hybrid documentary based on the true story about the Palestinian artist Zuhdi Al Adawi, who in 1975 at the age of just 15 years was convicted to 15 years’ imprisonment, which he served in the Israeli high-security prison Askalan.
With the help of his fellow prisoners and their families, he manages to stay alive by smuggling in color crayons and smuggling out his allegorical artwork – which are brought to life in partially animated sequences – done on pillowcases, so they find their way to the outside world.
